Interior film changes the look of a kitchen without replacing a single unit.

In short

  • Kitchen wrapping means covering your existing fronts with self-adhesive vinyl film — nothing gets replaced.
  • Flat cabinet doors and drawer fronts are very doable at home; corners, grooves and curved profiles take experience.
  • The result is made or broken by the surface: smooth, clean, dry, grease-free and sound.
  • Always order an A5 sample first — a colour on screen behaves differently in your own kitchen.
  • Allow roughly 10% extra film for edges and trim waste.

Want to give your kitchen a new look without a full refit? Then kitchen wrapping with interior film is well worth a look. With the right self-adhesive vinyl film you can turn a white kitchen matt black, swap a dated wood tone for a modern concrete look, or give the whole run a luxury marble or stone finish.

At XWrap Shop you'll find hundreds of interior films for kitchens, furniture, doors and other surfaces: wood effect, concrete effect, stone effect, textile effect, metallics and matt colours.

What is kitchen wrapping?

Kitchen wrapping means covering your existing kitchen components with self-adhesive vinyl film. Instead of replacing or painting the units, you use the existing fronts as your base. The film is cut to size and squeegeed down tight onto the surface.

Many XWrap Shop interior films use an Air-Flow adhesive layer, which makes trapped air far easier to work out as you apply.

Which parts can you wrap?

  • cabinet doors and drawer fronts
  • cabinet end panels and side panels
  • plinths and pelmets
  • certain wall panels
  • various other kitchen components

Not every surface is automatically suitable. Solid preparation is one of the biggest factors in a clean, long-lasting result.

Can you wrap your own kitchen?

Yes, kitchen wrapping is a job you can do yourself. The result depends heavily on preparation, the right tools and how methodically you work. Flat kitchen fronts are very manageable for beginners; corners, edges, deep grooves and curved shapes take more experience.

XWrap Shop interior film is made for DIY installers and professionals alike. Many films are stretchable and 3D-conformable, so they can be worked around certain corners and shapes.

First time wrapping?

Don't start with the trickiest part of your kitchen. Build up the difficulty:

  1. a simple flat cabinet door;
  2. a drawer front;
  3. an end panel;
  4. only then the awkward corners and edges.

That way you get a feel for the film before you take on the harder pieces.

How to wrap a kitchen yourself: step-by-step guide in 8 steps

1

Check the surface

The film bonds best to a smooth, clean, dry and sound surface. Suitable substrates include smooth lacquered wood, MDF, furniture board, certain plastics, HPL and smooth existing kitchen fronts.

A damaged, lifting, very porous or heavily textured surface needs to be prepared first.

2

Clean the kitchen thoroughly

Grease is the number one enemy of good adhesion. Remove grease, dust, dirt, silicone residue, wax and cleaning-product residue, then let the surface dry completely.

3

Take off the doors and handles

Remove the kitchen fronts where you can — it makes the application far more accurate. Mark the position of each door and hinge so everything goes back exactly where it came from.

4

Measure how much film you need

Measure every piece separately: width × height, with extra film all round so you can finish the edges neatly. Many XWrap Shop interior films are 122 cm wide and are cut as one continuous length; across different products, allow around 10% extra for trim waste.

So a 60 × 70 cm cabinet door is not a 60 × 70 cm order. You need extra material to wrap the edges, finish the corners and absorb any measuring errors. On a larger kitchen, put every dimension into one schedule first.

5

Choose the right kitchen wrap film

Colour and texture set the tone for the whole kitchen. The main finishes are below — along with our advice to order a sample first.

6

Cut the film to size

Lay the film on a clean surface, measure carefully and cut with a sharp blade. Cut slightly oversize rather than tight: surplus film can be trimmed away later, film that's too short can't be rescued.

7

Start applying

Don't peel the whole backing off at once. Work calmly and in control:

  1. position the film;
  2. peel back a small section of the backing;
  3. tack the film down;
  4. work across gradually;
  5. press down with a squeegee and drive the air out;
  6. keep checking your alignment.
8

Finish the corners and edges cleanly

The edges are what make a kitchen read as professional or amateur. With many interior films, heat can be used to work the film around corners and shapes. Use a hairdryer or a suitable heat gun carefully: not too hot and never too long in one spot. Exact properties vary per film — always check the product specifications.

Pro tip

Spend an extra half hour degreasing and cleaning rather than re-wrapping a front later. Grease under the film only shows up when it's too late.

Which kitchen cabinet wrap film should you choose?

This is arguably the best part. Interior film changes the character of the entire kitchen. At XWrap Shop you'll find, among others:

Matt black

Modern and premium. A firm favourite is Mat Black Velvet Grain: matt black with a subtle grain texture.

Wood effect

Warm and natural, in a range of grains. Oaky, for example, with natural oak tones.

Concrete effect

Ideal for an industrial kitchen with a raw but sharp look.

Stone and marble effect

For anyone after a calm, luxury finish.

Matt colours

From light neutrals through to deep anthracite.

Metallic

Metal-effect films for a modern, industrial feel.

Want to see the colour first?

Order an A5 sample before you order a whole kitchen

A colour on a screen behaves differently in your own kitchen — with your light, your worktop and your floor. Leave the sample on a cabinet door for a day, then decide.

Which tools do you need?

For a kitchen project you'll usually need:

  • squeegee
  • sharp craft knife with spare blades
  • tape measure
  • cleaning cloths and a suitable cleaner
  • hairdryer or heat gun
  • a film roll holder, if you have one
  • primer for difficult surfaces, if needed

How long does kitchen wrap film last?

Lifespan depends on the quality of the film, the preparation, the surface, how it was applied, how hard the kitchen is used and how it's maintained.

Certain XWrap Shop products carry a warranty of up to 10 years. Always check the specific product page for the exact properties of the film you've chosen.

Remember

The film isn't the only thing that decides the result. A good installation starts with a good surface — no film, however good, will fix a bad one.

How do you clean a wrapped kitchen?

Use a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild, suitable cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive products and scouring pads. For several XWrap Shop films, pH-neutral cleaners are the recommended choice.

What can and can't be wrapped?

Can I wrap my entire kitchen?

In many cases a large part of a kitchen can be wrapped, but not every component is automatically suitable. Check in particular:

  • the surface itself;
  • the condition of any existing paint or lacquer;
  • the shape of the component;
  • heat exposure;
  • moisture exposure;
  • how heavily it's used.

A flat cabinet door is a completely different proposition to a badly damaged worktop or a surface that's constantly exposed to high temperatures.

Wrapping over a painted kitchen

Careful

Has your kitchen been painted at some point? Then check that the paint is genuinely sound. If it's lifting or poorly bonded, the film can later come away together with the paint.

Interior film works beyond the kitchen too

The same interior film goes onto furniture, doors, table tops, wall panels and even bathroom walls. If you want to carry one style through the whole house, you can work with the same film in different rooms.

Bathroom walls finished in concrete effect interior film

Can I wrap my worktop as well?

That depends on the specific worktop, the film you choose and the conditions it faces. A worktop takes far more punishment than a cabinet door: heat, moisture, knives, scouring, heavy objects and hard daily use.

So never assume any interior film will do for a worktop. Always check the product specifications and ask for advice if you're unsure.

What does kitchen wrapping cost?

The cost of a kitchen makeover in film depends on the size of the kitchen, the number of components, the type of film and whether you fit it yourself or have it installed.

Doing it yourself, you're mainly paying for film, tools, samples and preparation. One big advantage: you can work through the kitchen piece by piece instead of replacing an entire kitchen just to change how it looks.

Replace the kitchen or wrap it?

Replacing the kitchenWrapping the kitchen
Major investmentLower entry cost
Plenty of strip-out workExisting kitchen stays put
Lots of wasteLess material replaced
Potentially a long buildFast makeover possible
A new kitchen requiredExisting kitchen gets a new look
Many decisions and planningMainly choosing colour and texture

Wrapping isn't the right answer for every kitchen. If the carcasses are worn out or damaged, replacing may be the smarter call. But if the kitchen is still technically sound and you mainly want to change the look, interior film is a seriously good option.

The 7 most common mistakes when wrapping a kitchen yourself

01
Not cleaning enoughGrease under the film causes adhesion failures.
02
Ignoring a poor surfaceLoose paint or damaged sections have to be sorted first.
03
Ordering too little filmAllow for edges and trim waste.
04
Rushing the jobWrapping isn't a race.
05
Using a blunt bladeA sharp blade gives far crisper cuts.
06
Using too much heatToo much heat can distort or damage the film.
07
Starting with the hardest partStart flat, build experience, then work up to the corners.

Can a kitchen be professionally wrapped too?

Yes. DIY wrapping suits capable home installers, but not everyone has the time, the patience or the experience to finish a full kitchen tightly. For complex projects, professional installation is often the better call.

XWrap Shop advises on film, colour, material, surface suitability, quantities, installation and tools.

Frequently asked questions about kitchen wrapping

Is kitchen wrapping difficult?

On simple flat components, wrapping is very learnable. Awkward corners, edges and shapes take more experience.

Can I wrap my kitchen cabinets myself?

Yes. Kitchen cabinets are one of the most common applications for interior film.

Which film is suitable for kitchen cabinets?

Use a high-quality interior film that suits the surface and the application in question. Always check the product specifications.

Can vinyl film go on MDF?

It can, on a suitable, stable and properly prepared surface. The surface must be clean, dry and fit for adhesion.

Can I wrap over existing paint?

You can, provided the paint layer is sound and the surface is suitable and properly prepared. Lifting paint has to be removed or repaired first.

Can I wrap over high-gloss kitchen cabinets?

A smooth high-gloss surface can be suitable, but the condition and make-up of the existing finish matter. If in doubt, test a small area first or ask for advice.

Can I wrap my kitchen black?

Yes. Black interior film gives an existing kitchen a modern, premium look.

Can I give my kitchen a wood effect?

Yes. There are various wood effect films in a wide range of colours and grains.

Can I give my kitchen a marble effect?

Yes. Stone and marble effect interior films give existing surfaces a luxury look, provided the surface and the application are suitable.

How much film do I need?

That depends on the number and dimensions of the components. Measure everything separately and keep extra material back for trim waste and edges.

Do I have to remove the cabinet doors?

It's usually wise to remove the fronts where possible. It lets you work far more accurately.

How do I clean kitchen wrap film?

Use a soft cloth and a mild, suitable cleaner. Avoid abrasive products.

Can I remove my kitchen film later on?

Many interior films are removable. How cleanly it comes off depends on the surface, the adhesive, how long it's been on and the conditions.

Is kitchen wrapping cheaper than a new kitchen?

If the existing kitchen is still technically sound, wrapping is generally a far more affordable way to change the look than replacing the whole kitchen.

Where can I buy kitchen wrap film?

XWrap Shop stocks a large collection of interior film and kitchen wrap film in a wide range of colours, textures and styles. Browse the collection.

Give your kitchen a new look

Replacing an entire kitchen isn't always necessary. If the bones of your kitchen are still good, interior film gives you a completely different look. From matt black to wood effect, concrete effect to marble, and from calm neutrals to bold textures: with the right film, your kitchen matches your own style.
